Of all of the different devices that we repair, there something odd about game consoles. With both the Xbox One, and the PS4, there’s a set of maybe 4 or 5 issues that happen to each one, and there’s rarely any problems with them outside of this. Based on that, I wanted to provide a helpful explanation of each issue, and the best way to avoid it happening to your console!

1. Console Won’t Start Up

If you press the power button on you console and it makes some noises, seems to be getting power, but simply won’t boot to the home screen, this could be an issue with the hard drive. If this is the case, the hard drive simply needs to be replaced, and the consoles operating system reinstalled on it. The most common reasons for this problem to develop is from general wear and tear, any movement of the console while it’s powered on, or from leaving the console powered on for extended periods of time.

2. HDMI Port Not Working

This is an issue which occurs on all consoles, but is more common with the PS4 than any others. Basically, the HDMI port on the rear of the console can easily become damaged, or disconnected from the board of the console. If you experience this issue, you will need the port replaced on the console, or the existing port resouldered to the board. This issue can arise if the port is used quite often (console is moved or transported frequently), the console is dropped, or the position of the HDMI cable places additional pressure on the port.

3. Disc Drive Not working

This issue can actually be one of the more difficult console repairs, so it’s important to avoid this issue where possible. Basically if your console won’t load up and inserted game disc, or other disc that can be an issue with the drive. Other than the obvious causes (two discs, coins, etc., placed inside), leaving games paused for extended periods of time can have an negative impact on the disc drive.

4. No Display on TV.

Other than an issue with the HDMI port, this can be caused by an issue with the GPU chip on the board of the console, which is quite common in all consoles. This issue would need to be checked by our technical team, and is generally caused by excessive heat being generated. Keeping the console in a well ventilated room, not using it for extender periods of time and ensuring that the fan and vents are not blocked with dust are all ways to avoid this issue.

5. No Power

Finally, sometimes the consoles are simply dead and won’t power on. This can sometimes be caused by an issue with the PSU (power supply unit) which can cease working in the console, and will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, this issue is quite random, so there’s not a lot that you can do to mitigate this issue occurring for you.

90 – 95% of all console issues will come down to these 5 issues, but if you are unsure of what’s happening with yours, or it doesn’t appear to be on this list, all you have to do is complete a short Quick Estimate form to find out more.
